Urban Stem Education Elementary Bilingual, BAS

Licenciatura en Ciencias Aplicadas • UBSTE BAS BL​ 

El programa bilingüe de Licenciatura en Ciencias Aplicadas Educación STEM Urbana - Primaria (BAS-IPS) está diseñado para integrar cursos de educación general y primaria urbana que se concentran específicamente en las metodologías para la enseñanza culturalmente receptiva en entornos urbanos y los graduados integrarán las habilidades lingüísticas de español e inglés para comunicarse profesionalmente en el campo de la educación primaria urbana con hablantes de español e inglés. Como tal, la especialización de este título de BAS se llama Estudios Profesionales Integrativos. Este programa se enfoca en capacitar a los estudiantes para que se conviertan en maestros que brinden educación STEM equitativa y de alta calidad en el entorno K-8. Las experiencias de aprendizaje a través del servicio de los maestros están integradas a través de todo el programa. Este título es un camino hacia la ruta alternativa para la certificación docente. Los graduados de este programa están preparados para tomar los exámenes de Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) que son obligatorios y deben completarse junto con el Certificado de Maestría en Educación Urbana de Davenport University, antes de obtener una certificación de maestro interina. El Manual de la Facultad de Educación Urbana proporciona todo lo que un graduado necesita saber y hacer para realizar el MTTC, solicitar la certificación docente interina y avanzar hacia la certificación docente estándar. Es importante que los estudiantes consulten los requisitos con sus estados o países individuales. 

Bachelor of Applied Science • UBSTE BAS BL​ 

The Bachelor of Applied Science Integrative Professional Studies (BAS-IPS) in Urban STEM Education Elementary Bilingual program is designed to integrate general education and urban elementary courses that concentrate specifically on the methodologies for culturally responsive teaching in urban settings and graduates will integrate the language skills of Spanish and English to professionally communicate in the field of urban elementary education with Spanish and English speakers. As such, the major for this BAS degree is called Integrative Professional Studies. This program focuses on training students to become teachers who provide equitable high-quality STEM education in the K-8 setting.  Service learning teacher experiences are embedded throughout the program. This degree is a pathway to the alternative route to teacher certification. Graduates from this program are prepared to take the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) exams that are required, and must be completed along with Davenport University’s Graduate Certificate in Urban Education, before obtaining an interim teacher certification. The College of Urban Education Handbook provides everything a graduate needs to know and do in order to take the MTTC, apply for interim teaching certification, and progress to the standard teacher certification. It is important for students to check with their individual states or countries for requirements.

Learning Outcomes


  • Understand how to design and manage a student-centered classroom that leads to an equitable education, student empowerment/ownership, and active engagement in exploration and learning.

  • Demonstrate the ability to adapt and design standard-aligned instruction to meet 

  • student needs, assets and interests, connecting student language, culture and experiences to learning.

  • Reflect on how their teaching practices impact the education of all students with particular attention to students from historically underserved communities and social identity groups through culturally responsive curriculum instruction and advocacy.

  • Design and analyze formative and summative assessments to inform instruction based on student progress.

  • Integrate instructional technology to empower learners to be creative and analytical thinkers, collaborators, and good digital citizens.

  • Engage in intentional community partnerships and service learning beyond the school setting that  support learners’ interests, provides learning opportunities and skills not offered in the classroom, and scaffolds college and career readiness which develops pipelines to the workforce.

  • Possess a deep knowledge of core content in their respective STEM discipline specific concentrations that enables them to teach diverse learners.

  • Apply discipline-specific training, current research on how children learn science, and strategies for teaching in the various STEM disciplines culturally responsively with an emphasis on urban contexts.

  • Engage in practical STEM teaching experience through observed and mentored service learning that supports the development of self-efficacy resulting in culturally-competent  teachers who positively impact student outcomes.

  • Engage in observed and mentored practical STEM teaching experiences that support increased teacher retention rates.

  • Integrate the language skills of Spanish and English to professionally communicate in the field of urban elementary education with Spanish and English speakers.
