NURS 421Y - Nurse Manager and Leader Lecture/Clinical 3 Credits This combined didactic and clinical course focuses on concepts of nursing leadership and management principles in healthcare settings. The role of the nurse leader in promoting quality healthcare outcomes is emphasized. Topics include healthcare policy, team dynamics, quality improvement, informatics, and self-care of the professional nurse. Experiential learning opportunities allow students to apply knowledge of nursing leadership and management to nursing practice in various practice locations. The experiential component provides opportunities to evaluate leadership styles, collaborate with an interprofessional team, expand understanding of organizational systems, and integrate delegation and conflict resolution strategies. Note: NURS 421Y requires 45 hours of clinical for the semester. Grade Note(s): A grade of B- or better is required to pass this course successfully. Prerequisite(s): Unencumbered RN license Corequisite(s): NURS 415 Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Evaluate practice standards, statutes, and regulations governing nursing practice within the context of the professional nurse.
2. Analyze various leadership and management styles valuable to the professional nurse in care coordination.
3. Analyze team dynamics and conflict resolution principles to enhance clinical judgment and collaboration within the health care team.
4. Examine the influence of organizational culture and material resource allocation in complex healthcare settings.
5. Relate the role of informatics and communication technology to the delivery of safe and effective nursing care for diverse populations in complex healthcare settings.
6. Collaborate in the management of care for culturally and ethnically diverse individuals, families, and groups.
7. Apply quality improvement principles in alignment with the role of a nurse leader in healthcare.
8. Explain the professional nurse’s role in healthcare policy evaluation and development.
9. Describe principles for ethical and evidence-informed decision-making in nursing leadership roles.
10. Identify components of self-care and self-advocacy to promote personal and professional development.
