NURS 420Y - Community Health Nursing Lecture/Clinical


4 Credits
This combined didactic and clinical course focuses on community and public health nursing concepts. Topics include population-centered risk reduction, health promotion, public health policy, public health emergencies and disasters, and social determinants of health. Experiential learning opportunities allow students to apply knowledge of nursing and public health nursing to population-centered nursing practice. Interprofessional collaboration will be utilized to meet the health needs of a selected population. Promoting equitable health outcomes for diverse populations through advocacy and education will be emphasized. NURS420Y requires 90 hours of clinical for the semester.
Grade Note(s): A grade of B- or better is required to pass this course successfully.

Prerequisite(s): NURS 315  & Unencumbered RN license
Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Reflect on personal biases and barriers that may impact health outcomes.
2. Analyze social determinants of health and other contributing factors that place communities and populations at risk for poor health outcomes.
3. Analyze population health data to identify risk reduction and promotion priorities.
4. Examine policies, as well as political and economic influences, from global to local levels, as they impact health care delivery for population-focused care.
5. Utilize Healthy People objectives, leading health indicators and community assessment data to plan, implement and evaluate a community-based intervention to improve health at the population level.
6. Use interprofessional collaboration and advocacy in the planning and implementation of community-based interventions.
7. Apply culturally-sensitive strategies in the community setting to promote health, reduce risk, and prevent disease.
8. Explore the roles of the public health and community health nurse and how they impact health promotion and health equity.
9. Describe the disaster management cycle and preparedness of a community to respond to natural or man-made disasters, emergencies, and environmental health concerns.
