NURS 315 - Health Promotion and Education


3 Credits
This course introduces students to concepts of health promotion and wellness for individuals and families across the lifespan. Students will learn about health-promoting behaviors that reduce risk factors, including healthy diet, exercise, stress management, sleep, health screening, injury-prevention, and self-care. The Healthy People Framework will be explored in the context of how individual and family health promotion fits into community and population health. Health behavior change theories and principles of interprofessional collaboration will be used to examine educational interventions for promoting health and wellness.
Grade Note(s): A grade of B- or better is required to pass this course successfully.
Prerequisite(s): BSN-PL Students: NURS 325  ; BSN-C Students: ENGL 311  
Corequisite(s): NURS 250  
Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Develop person-centered teaching plans across the lifespan that promote self-care management based on theory and practice.
2. Relate the role of the nurse and the interprofessional team in health promotion activities to the aims and objectives of Healthy People.
3. Implement educational health behavior change models for individuals and families, taking into consideration cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains.
4. Examine the impact of diversity on individuals, families, and communities as it relates to societal health beliefs, practices, status, access, and delivery of care.
5. Discuss the nurse’s ethical and legal responsibility to advocate for equitable health policies that promote health and wellness for all.
6. Discuss the attributes of a health-promoting lifestyle, including nutrition, exercise, self-care, sleep, and stress management.
