NURS 456 - Nursing Care of Adults III 3 Credits This course is the third of medical surgical courses reinforcing theoretical knowledge and clinical judgment involved in nursing care of a diverse adult population. Concepts will address health promotion, management of advanced medical-surgical health alterations, and therapeutic interventions utilizing nursing clinical judgment and the nursing process. Students will incorporate the characteristics of safe practice, healthcare quality, and interprofessional communication to optimize person-centered care. Note: This course is reserved for special situation transfer nursing students who have been granted advanced standing as a senior nursing student. Grade Note(s): A grade of B- or better is required to pass this course. Component Corequisite(s): NURS 456, NURS 456L ,and NURS 456C . The lecture, lab(L), and clinical (C) components of each NURS course must be successfully completed during the same semester. All component corequisites must be repeated if a failing grade is received in any one of them. Prerequisite(s): Special situation transfer nursing students who have been granted advanced standing as a senior nursing student. Course Learning Outcomes:
- Develop effective interprofessional collaboration with members of the healthcare team and therapeutic communication techniques with patients and families.
- Establish priorities of care based on analysis of assessment findings, diagnostic test results, medical diagnosis and psychosocial factors for adult clients with advanced medical-surgical health alterations.
- Relate medical-surgical concepts lab values and diagnostic findings for advanced health alterations with their clinical manifestations and nursing interventions used to deliver safe person-centered care for the adult client.
- Apply foundational knowledge of the nursing process and clinical judgment for health promotion and management of advanced health alterations in the adult population.
- Explore personal and professional values regarding the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion related to person-centered care for the adult client.
- Utilize evidence-based information to promote healthcare quality and safety.
- Discuss ethical decision-making throughout the stages of the nursing process and clinical judgment model for the adult population.
