Admissions   

The Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling program provides the specialized knowledge, skills and experience required for students to perform effectively as mental health counselors.  Upon successful completion of the program, students will have gained the experience and skills needed to begin work as professionals in the field of mental health.  This includes the required knowledge of counseling techniques, ethical standards, ability to work with diverse populations, and the need to promote equity and inclusion within the field of mental health. Completion of this program provides a pathway for an individual to ultimately become a licensed professional counselor.

Learning Outcomes


  • Incorporate ethical and professional mental health counseling standards in the practice of counseling (or in practice). 

  • Synthesize the unique experiences and needs of clients from diverse groups into culturally relevant client evaluation, guidance, and treatment.

  • Apply ethical and culturally relevant strategies to promote wellness across the lifespan.

  • Apply theories of culturally responsive career development, counseling, and decision-making to guide clients through career and employment planning.

  • Develop strategies to collaboratively engage clients in decision-making and goal setting through the counseling process to generate treatment plans accounting for individual preferences, culture, and contexts.

  • Apply theories and models of counseling intervention to facilitate culturally responsive individual and group counseling sessions. 

  • Employ (or use) culturally relevant diagnostic tests to inform mental health counseling.

  • Utilize culturally and developmentally responsive evidence-based practices, research and evaluation methods to inform counseling practice.

  • Utilize best practices and culturally responsive strategies when practicing clinical mental health counseling.
