OCTH 789 - Emerging Areas of Practice - Program Development and Assessment


3 Credits
This course prepares students to investigate, plan, develop, and market new services in emerging areas of practice. Students will use critical thinking to determine the service delivery model, requirements for physical/human resources, and the mechanism for ongoing evaluation of the program. As part of this process, students will investigate sources of funding and write a grant proposal to support the development of the new program.
Grade Note(s): A grade of B or better must be earned to pass this course successfully.
Prerequisite(s): 3rd semester MSOT courses
Corequisite(s): 4th semester MSOT courses
Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Explain the value and role of occupation, as it relates to health and quality of life, to internal and external audiences.
2. Collect and organize data from multiple sources evaluating professional issues and identifying emerging areas of practice.
3. Propose a service delivery model, estimate resource requirements, contextual factors and create a program evaluation plan for an emerging area of practice.
4. Appraise external funding sources appropriate for new program development.
5. Articulate the roles of the occupational therapist including consultant and an advocate for change and demonstrate skills necessary to create a grant proposal to support a new program in an emerging area of practice.
6. Adhere to safety regulations specific to the service setting.
7. Plan and develop a new service in an emerging area of practice following the principles of instructional design.
