HINT 799 - Capstone Experience in HIIM


3 Credits
A thesis or project is required for the capstone in the HIIM program. In order to register, a student must have completed all course requirements for this degree and submit an acceptable proposal to the HIIM Program Director. The thesis consists of original research on any topic in the area of health information management, health information systems, and/or health informatics. Oral presentation and defense of the thesis is required. The capstone project will be a rigorous project focused on a real-world health information, health information systems, or health informatics setting and application of problem-solving methods for development of solutions. A final written report is required.
Grade Note(s): A grade of B or better is required to pass this course.
Prerequisite(s): All HIIM MS courses; Program Director Approval; must be taken in last semester.
Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Ensure adherence to research administration processes and policies such as Institutional Review Board IRB, HIPAA security, and privacy research regulatory agencies.
2. Integrate their knowledge, skills, and work experience through demonstration of a comprehensive project with clearly defined objectives reflecting their academic program.
3. Formulate appropriate research question and hypothesis if applicable.
4. Synthesize the research design, project implementation, data collection, and data analysis procedure.
5. Interpret and communicate analytical results in a format that can be used for decision making.
6. Appraise the results and implications for health informatics and information management practice, theory, and education.
7. Compile recommendations for further research.
8. Prepare and present information utilizing appropriate technologies for presentation and/or publication.
