NURS 421 - Nurse Manager and Leader


2 Credits
Registration Internship/Practicum Note: BSN Completion/Concurrent students only.
This course will focus on the management and leadership roles of the baccalaureate nurse. The student will utilize decision-making tools of management and leadership to guide a multidisciplinary team through complex and evolving health care situations.
Grade Note(s): A grade of B- or better is required to pass this course successfully.
Component Corequisite(s): NURS 421 and NURS 421C .The lecture, lab (L) and clinical (C) components of each NURS course must be successfully completed during the same semester. All component co-requisites must be repeated if a failing grade is received in any one of them.
Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Analyze various leadership and management styles valuable to the professional nurse in care coordination.
2. Analyze team dynamics and conflict resolution principles to enhance clinical judgment and collaboration within the health care team.
3. Relate the role of informatics and communication technology to the delivery of safe and effective nursing care for diverse populations in complex healthcare settings.
4. Analyze the influence of organizational culture, economic factors, and system processes on healthcare outcomes.
5. Apply quality improvement principles in alignment with the nurse leader’s role in healthcare.
6. Explain the professional nurse’s role in healthcare policy evaluation and development.
7. Identify components of self-care and self-advocacy to promote personal and professional development.
