SOSC 201 - Diversity in Society


3 Credits
This course introduces students to the complex issues surrounding diversity in U.S. society and to the need for understanding difference in an increasingly globalized world. Students will explore the social-historical context of multiple experiences on individual, cultural, and institutional levels. They will analyze the complex interactions regarding diversity in organizations. Students will also evaluate their own thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors in order to understand their roles in a diverse society.
Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Analyze the benefits of inclusion and the consequences of ignoring diversity in the workplace and society.
2. Connect key social and cultural systems to environmental and historical circumstances.
3. Communicate the value of cultural competence in the workforce and in local and global communities.
4. Identify practices related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion that maximize one’s ability to meet organizational goals.
5. Recognize one’s own positionality in relation to diverse groups.
6. Discuss the social-historical backgrounds of diverse groups in U.S. society.
