Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)

Academic credit for a course may be awarded to those students who produce a completed petition detailing college-level learning gained through experience. Consideration will be given to learning gained through career and personal experience in job-related activities and community participation, or from training at specialized schools or testing programs. The petitions are assessed by faculty evaluators, and credit is assigned based on merit. Students must use the University’s format. Regardless of success or failure, students will incur an administrative fee to their student account for all PLA attempts. Students may use the PLA process for up to 50% of their major course credit requirement.

In general, students are not allowed to utilize the PLA process to complete a capstone course. Exceptions can be made in rare circumstances. To be considered for an exception, students must petition the department chair and PLA coordinator.

These hours may be applied toward the residency requirement.

Students should contact their Academic Advisor, Internship Manager or PLA Coordinator to receive additional information on this option.
